I've created a Java Gradle project, but, for a reason, the tests for it have to be in Kotlin. Let's take this test, for example:
package org.***.***
import org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions
import org.junit.jupiter.api.Test
class TestTest {
@Test
fun testThat2Plus3Is5() {
Assertions.assertEquals(5, 2 + 3)
}
}
But when I run the tests using ./gradlew test
, they don't seem to run at all. It says that 'Test events were not received'. And when I run this test using IntelliJ IDEA, it fails with the following error:
Internal Error occurred.

Here's how build.gradle
looks:
plugins {
id 'java'
}
group 'org.***'
version '1.0-SNAPSHOT'
repositories {
mavenCentral()
}
dependencies {
testImplementation 'org.junit.jupiter:junit-jupiter-api:5.8.1'
testRuntimeOnly 'org.junit.jupiter:junit-jupiter-engine:5.8.1'
testImplementation 'org.jetbrains.kotlinx:lincheck:2.34'
}
test {
useJUnitPlatform()
}
Here's how the project structure looks:
- src
- main
- java
- org.***.***
- ...
- test
- java // no matter if I rename it to java or kotlin
- org.***.***
- ...
- TestTest.kt
The setup looks good, but you're not going to get anywhere with Kotlin code unless you have something to compile it – and Java is not going to do that for you.
To do this you should add the Kotlin plugin to the project:
plugins {
id "org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm" version "2.0.21"
}
Then your test should run.
A couple of other points that you may like to know:
java
directory by default but putting them there is unconventional
