I'm experimenting with child processes because this seems the only way to make an old C library run in parallel that cannot be used in threads.
My minimal example writes three integer values into mapped memory. In the child process, I want to change these values. Changing the last (third) value works, but when changing the second value only I get an error with this output:

I have two questions:
This doesn't really have to do with processes or mmap
at all: Simpler program with similar results.

to char*
since adding numbers to void*
is not Standard C++, though some compilers have an extension to treat it like adding to char*

sprintf
writes a null terminator after the end of the actual output. So when you use it to write "the second value" in the child, it puts a '\0'
into the first byte of "the third value". Also, you've actually been relying on the '\0'
at ((char*)ptr0)[3*32]
after "the third value" for std::cout
to know when to stop printing.
Instead of sprintf
and operator<<
with const char*
, which are both meant for null-terminated strings, I'd suggest functions that just copy bytes:
