Issues with Plyers GPS module on Android 12 device

I've been having issues with Plyers GPS module, and cannot fix them. I've already tried advices from this Github thread - https://github.com/kivy/plyer/issues/657. I've tried modifying gps.py with changes from a pull-request, tried requesting both permissions in a single runtime request (not sure if I did that correctly), tried adding Support Compat 28.0.0 in buildozer specs, as well as the aar file in the app directory as well.

Not only that, but I've also tried some advices from this blog post - https://www.msale.com/blog-2/2019/8/10/technology-at-msale-tips-amp-tricks-part-2-kivy-runtime-permissions-on-android and added two methods to check and grant required permissions.

Nothing seems to work, and I'm kind of lost here.

Here's my main.py code:

from kivy.app import App
from kivy.lang import Builder
from plyer import gps
from permissions.location import check_permission, ask_permission

    Button:
        text: "Request ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION"
        on_release:
            app.request_location_permission()
    Button:
        text: 'Start GPS'
        on_press: app.start_gps()
    Button:
        text: 'Stop GPS'
        on_press: app.stop_gps()
    Label:
        id: label
        text: ''
'''

class TestApp(App):

    bg_gps = ''

    def set_coordinates(self, **kwargs):
        # self.root.ids.label.text = f'lat: {kwargs["lat"]}, lon: #{kwargs["lon"]},'
        print(kwargs)
        print('SET_COORDINATES IS WORKING')

    def on_start(self):
        gps.configure(on_location=self.set_coordinates)
        print('GPS configured on START')
        gps.start()
        print('GPS started on START')

    def start_gps(self):
        gps.configure(on_location=self.set_coordinates)
        print('GPS configured')
        gps.start()
        print('GPS started')

    def stop_gps(self):
        gps.stop()
        print('STOPPED')

    def check_location_permission(self):
        check_permission("android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION")
        check_permission("android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION")

    def request_location_permission(self):
        ask_permission("android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION")
        ask_permission("android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION")

    def build(self):
        return Builder.load_string(KV)

TestApp().run()

Here's content of location.py:

from jnius import autoclass
from kivy.logger import Logger

PythonActivity = autoclass("org.kivy.android.PythonActivity").mActivity
Context = autoclass('android.content.Context')
ContextCompat = autoclass('android.support.v4.content.ContextCompat')

def check_permission(permission, activity=PythonActivity):
    permission_status = ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(activity, permission)
    Logger.info(permission_status)
    permission_granted = 0 == permission_status
    Logger.info("Permission Status: {}".format(permission_granted))
    return permission_granted

def ask_permission(permission, activity=PythonActivity):
    PythonActivity.requestPermissions([permission])

Here's my buildozer spec file (I've tried changing android.api from 31 to 28 and others with no result):

#    Profiles
#
# You can extend section / key with a profile
# For example, you want to deploy a demo version of your application without
# HD content. You could first change the title to add "(demo)" in the name
# and extend the excluded directories to remove the HD content.
#
#[app@demo]
#title = My Application (demo)
#
#[app:source.exclude_patterns@demo]
#images/hd/*
#
# Then, invoke the command line with the "demo" profile:
#
#buildozer --profile demo android debug

And finally here's error code from Buildozer when trying to run and deploy using VM:

Perhaps people that are more knowledgable in Java (I know zero of it), Python, kivy and other things can assist me.

Solution

  • So after looking through Kivy Discord server (which I recommend to anyone who's using Kivy), I've found out that solution with using plyer-s fork version from HyTurtle is working.

    To do so, for anyone who's struggling with the same issue, add this master link to buildozer requirments - https://github.com/HyTurtle/plyer/archive/master.zip like that

    requirements = python3,kivy, https://github.com/HyTurtle/plyer/archive/master.zip

    And dont forget to run 'buildozer -v android clean' command to remove previously installed plyer version if you had one.

    Whoohoo!
