Single Activity does not inflate menu for Toolbar

Question

I am unable inflate a menu resource and have it attach to the toolbar for my activity.

This seems pretty straightforward, but I guess I'm missing something obvious. I am using a NavGraph, so I don't know if that affects the toolbar or not?

Does anyone see what I have done wrong?

Use the method setSupportActionBar instead of setActionBar:

   override fun onCreate(savedInstanceState: Bundle?) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState)
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main)
        setSupportActionBar(findViewById(R.id.main_toolbar))

        ....
    }
