gulp watch issue in sage 8.5.1

Question

I'm currently working on a site that is using Sage 8.5.1.

I've done all of the following:

1. Install gulp and Bower globally with npm install -g gulp bower
2. Navigate to the theme directory and run npm install
3. Run bower install

But when I run gulp watch, I get the following issue:

Any suggestions?

Per a bug filed against ionic (same error, different build utility), this seems to be a problem with some combination of module dependencies. Their solution:

rm -rf node_modules
rm package-lock.json
npm cache clean --force
npm install

After I ran this, I found that most of my module dependencies had changed, many of them minor or build updates.
