Using boost::program_options::validate with own class in namespace


The following adapted example compiles if magic_number is not in a namespace, but fails if it is in a namespace.

Why doesn't it find the validate function if the target class is in a namespace?


The error produced on MSVC is:

converter_lexical.hpp(243): error C2338: Target type is neither std::istream'able nor std::wistream'able.

I get the same error with Clang here.

Solution

  • Defining validate() within the ns1 namespace allows it to compile (or moving magic_number out of it, as you found). It seems that your global overload isn't considered by name lookup wherever Boost calls validate().

    Edit: I think this is because the template version of validate() defined in boost::program_options is considered a better match than a global overload but a worse match than an overload defined in the same namespace as magic_number. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about C++ name lookup rules can comment if I'm wrong about this.
