Managed Object Context is nil from App Delegate


I followed this tutorial on Core Data and I am trying to adapt it to my project. https://www.appcoda.com/introduction-to-core-data/

So when I try to access my managed object context via:

NSManagedObjectContext *context = [self context];

I get a null exception error as this is nil. I define context earlier in the View Controller here:

@interface UpdateCardsViewController ()

@property NSArray* fullCardList;
@property NSManagedObjectContext* context;

@end

@implementation UpdateCardsViewController

- (NSManagedObjectContext *) setManagedObjectContext {
    NSManagedObjectContext *context = nil;
    id delegate = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate];
    if ([delegate respondsToSelector:@selector(managedObjectContext)]) {
        context = [delegate managedObjectContext];
    }
    return context;
}

Which I believe should get the instance of ManagedObjectContext which is auto created in AppDelegate.

Here is my AppDelegate also incase the problem is there:

I may be approaching this completely wrong, but I thought I had got the tutorial up until this point.

Solution

  • The linked tutorial is outdated (pre iOS10) but you are using an iOS10+ Core Data stack.

    Change your method to

    - (NSManagedObjectContext *) managedObjectContext {
        AppDelegate *delegate = (AppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate];
        return [delegate persistentContainer.viewContext];
    }
    

    The respondsSelector check is not necessary since you clearly know that the Core Data stack exists in AppDelegate. And you are getting the context not setting it.

    The property context is not needed either, just write

    NSManagedObjectContext *context = [self managedObjectContext];
