secure Elmah remoteaccess not working

I have added Elmah to my MVC projet via Nuget.

I have been reading the allowremoteaccess about configuring the remoteaccess to elmah logs.

At the moment, I am able to view the logs without being authenticated. I am not sure why that is.

I only want to give access to a single user let's say "Foo".

Here is a snippet of what the web.config looks like in terms of Elmah.

<appSettings>
    <add key="elmah.mvc.requiresAuthentication" value="true" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.allowedRoles" value="Admin" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.allowedUsers" value="Foo" />
</appSettings>

<modules>
  <remove name="FormsAuthentication" />
  <remove name="ApplicationInsightsWebTracking" />
  <add name="ApplicationInsightsWebTracking" type="Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.Web.ApplicationInsightsHttpModule, Microsoft.AI.Web" preCondition="managedHandler" />
  <add name="ErrorLog" type="Elmah.ErrorLogModule, Elmah" preCondition="managedHandler" />
  <add name="ErrorMail" type="Elmah.ErrorMailModule, Elmah" preCondition="managedHandler" />
  <add name="ErrorFilter" type="Elmah.ErrorFilterModule, Elmah" preCondition="managedHandler" />
</modules>

  <authorization>
    <allow roles="admin" />
    <allow users="foo"/>
  </authorization>

Edit, full web.config:

Solution

  • When looking at the <autorization> element in your example, it looks like you are combining configuration styles from ELMAH and Elmah.MVC. When using Elmah.MVC, you specify authorization in appSettings only and don't include a <location> element (which can include authorization).

    I just tested the following appSettings in a new project (which I can share with you if you'd like?):

    <add key="elmah.mvc.disableHandler" value="false" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.disableHandleErrorFilter" value="false" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.requiresAuthentication" value="true" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.IgnoreDefaultRoute" value="false" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.allowedRoles" value="*" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.allowedUsers" value="Thomas" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.route" value="elmah" />
    <add key="elmah.mvc.UserAuthCaseSensitive" value="true" />

    If you need additional help, maybe share the entire web.config, to make it more clear where the bug is.
