gradlew/Android Studio - Unsupported major.minor version 52.0

Question

I am running:

./gradlew assembleDebug 

from my project folder and getting the error:

* What went wrong:
A problem occurred evaluating project ':app'.
> java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: com/android/build/gradle/AppPlugin : Unsupported major.minor version 52.0

I have the following build.gradle:

I updated the java in /usr/bin/java from: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

and it builds now.
