I've discovered something weird on CodePen. If I return
a template literal from a function, it returns an empty string. If I assign the exact same template literal to a variable first, then return
the variable, it returns the expected string.
If I view the pen in full page view or debug mode, the problem goes away.
My question is, did I find a bug at CodePen, or am I overlooking something I did wrong?

The following code snippet may be pointless since it only seems to be a problem at CodePen...
window.onload = function() {
const useVariable = document.getElementById('useVariable');
const endpoint = 'https://gist.githubusercontent.com/Miserlou/c5cd8364bf9b2420bb29/raw/2bf258763cdddd704f8ffd3ea9a3e81d25e2c6f6/cities.json';
const cities = [];
fetch(endpoint)
.then(response => response.json())
.then(data => cities.push(...data));
function findMatches(wordToMatch, cities) {
return cities.filter(place => {
const regex = new RegExp(wordToMatch, 'gi');
return place.city.match(regex) || place.state.match(regex);
});
}
function displayMatches() {
const matchArray = findMatches(this.value, cities);
const html = matchArray.map(place => {
if (useVariable.checked) {
let listItem = `
<li>
<span class="name">${place.city}, ${place.state}</span>
<span class="population">${place.population}</span>

} else {

}
const searchInput = document.querySelector('.search');
const suggestions = document.querySelector('.suggestions');
searchInput.addEventListener('change', displayMatches);
searchInput.addEventListener('keyup', displayMatches);

You might recognize this code from #Javascript30. This is challenge #6.
The CodePen team was able to confirm that this is a bug in CodePen through their Twitter account:
https://twitter.com/VAggrippino/status/822727824599490560
I had hoped that one of them would also post an answer here, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
