Android drawable not showing up

Question

I am trying to make a very simple button in XML with a drawable. The problem is it does not show up at all.

Here is the drawable code:

     <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/listview_background_shape">
        <stroke android:width="2dp" android:color="#ff207d94" />
        <padding android:left="2dp"
            android:top="2dp"
            android:right="2dp"
            android:bottom="2dp" />
        <corners android:radius="5dp" />
        <solid android:color="#ffffffff" />
    </shape>

</selector>

And here is the very simple test activity:

Only the text in the button shows.

What very simple mistake am I making?

use tag item as the direct child of the selector tag
