How can I extend JComboBox to allow user to remove list items by clicking an x button, like an Internet browser tab?


I am trying to create an object that resembles a JComboBox, but I want the user to be able to remove an item from the list. Imagine that each list element has to its right an x icon or button like what you find on a tab in your internet browser, where clicking on the x would delete the corresponding list item.

I have been trying to extend JComboBox with new editors and renderers, trying to add a button beside each label, and I have had little success. What is a decent way of going about this?

All the tutorials and examples I have found to extend JComboBox only seem to involve JLabel functionality, which appears to prevent the button functionality that I need.
