Enable mtrace (MALLOC_TRACE) for binary program

Question

How can I enable mtrace() (and MALLOC_TRACE env) for a binary program without sources?

mtrace is feature of glibc: http://www.gnu.org/s/hello/manual/libc/Allocation-Debugging.html
