Spaceleak in Haskell trie


I wrote a trie implementation in Haskell and got some performance issues. I profiled my code accordingly to http://book.realworldhaskell.org/read/profiling-and-optimization.html and could nail down the problem. It is the insertWith method of my trie:

empty :: Trie a k
empty = Trie Nothing Map.empty

insertWith :: Ord k => (a -> a -> a) -> [k] -> a -> Trie k a -> Trie k a
insertWith f [] a t@(Trie Nothing  _) = t { value = Just a }
insertWith f [] a t@(Trie (Just b) _) = t { value = Just $ f a b }
insertWith f (k:ks) a t = t { childs = m }
    where
        recurse = insertWith f ks a
        m = Map.insertWith (\_ child -> recurse child) k (recurse empty) (childs t)

My profiling Code:

Have anybody an idea how to make the insertWith method perform a bit better?

    insertWith f [] a t@(Trie Nothing  _) = t { value = Just a }
    insertWith f [] a t@(Trie (Just b) _) = t { value = Just $ f a b }
    

    a and f a b are being stored unevaluated. Try

    insertWith f [] a t@(Trie Nothing  _) = a `seq` t { value = Just a }
    insertWith f [] a t@(Trie (Just b) _) = t { value = Just $! f a b }
