How do you create a legend for a contour plot?


I can't seem to find the answer anywhere! I found a discussion here, but trying this I get a TypeError: 'NoneType' object is not iterable:

>>> import numpy as np
>>> import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
>>> x, y = np.meshgrid(np.arange(10),np.arange(10))

  • You can create proxy artists to make the legend:

    import numpy as np
    import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
    x, y = np.meshgrid(np.arange(10),np.arange(10))
    z = np.sqrt(x**2 + y**2)
    cs = plt.contourf(x,y,z,levels=[2,3,4,6])
    
    proxy = [plt.Rectangle((0,0),1,1,fc = pc.get_facecolor()[0]) 
        for pc in cs.collections]
    
    plt.legend(proxy, ["range(2-3)", "range(3-4)", "range(4-6)"])
    plt.show()
